Agenda

1) Introductions — Introductions and put questions in the chat that you have.

2) All Group Discussion — Discuss how at the 6th Annual College Summit, none of the 15 student presentations included a Campaign Action (i.e., a public display of their power near the decision-maker/target), which is a main goal of a social action course. Scott ML’s 7 Weeks & GO document and Bobby’s TSA Course Plan will be discussed as a response; we will also discuss other possible responses.

3) Discipline-Based Breakout Groups — Then, we will break into discipline-based groups to share your draft syllabus with colleagues and discuss:

  • Where have you placed the “active parts” of the social action model (i.e., Issue Development, Building Power, and Campaign Launch) versus the "reflective parts" (Setting the Tone & Group Dynamics, Theory, and Research)?
  • What social action books, readings, and assignments do you plan to use?
  • What discipline-specific readings have you incorporated?
  • Other questions?

4) All Group Discussion — We will then gather as a whole group to discuss general questions about teaching social action, such as:

  • How will you track the progress of student campaigns in real time in order to get to a Campaign Action?
  • Will student campaigns focus on a specific issue or be open-ended for students to choose?
  • What will be the minimum size for your student campaigns?
  • Will campaigns occur on campus, off campus, or both?
  • How often will students get the chance to meet in their groups to discuss their campaigns in class?
  • Other questions?

5) Updated & Reminders —

  • In the coming days/weeks, please send your completed syllabus to Scott, so we can post it on your course link.
  • Come to Zoom Meetups: Feb 20th and March 27th, 3-4:30 pm EST.
  • SML can Zoom into your class—best time, after students develop their targets and demands.
  • Have your students fill out Student Campaign Form (possibly put into your syllabus and give extra credit for it). We will send you recommendations; it is up to you whether you share them with your students.
  • Invite your students to attend the Spring ‘26 Summit on College Student Social Action on May 7th, 3-4:30 pm EST. Possibly include this invitation in your syllabus (extra credit?)
  • How to write a good press release…SML glad to discuss.
  • Student Group Contract, Grading Rubric, & Quizzes
  • Social Workers—Attend TSA by Your Discipline—Tuesday, February 10th at 1 pm EST
    • Env and Sustainability Faculty-TBD
