Please join us on Thursday, January 8, from 3-4:30 pm EST, to discuss the progress of your syllabus development. This meeting is for faculty and staff teachers who have completed an Institute and are preparing a syllabus to use in an upcoming social action class or workshop.
During the syllabi review, we will break into discipline-based groups to share draft syllabi with colleagues and discuss:
- How you've structured the "thinking parts" of social action around the “doing parts” (i.e., Issue Development, Building Power, and Campaign Launch).
- Which social action books, readings, and assignments you plan to use.
- Which discipline-specific readings will you incorporate.
We will then gather as a whole group to discuss general questions about teaching social action, such as:
- Whether student campaigns will focus on a specific issue or be open-ended for students to choose
- What the minimum size requirements will be for student campaigns
- Whether campaigns should occur on campus, off campus, or both.
- How often will students have to meet in their groups to discuss their campaigns.
In addition, we also discuss:
- how to track the students progress in real time on their campaigns by using Mural Board
- using a rubric to grade your Portfolios (if you decide to use them).
- how to help students write a press release
- consider offering this assignment at end of semester—email SML and cc you all fliers developed, action taken, social media account, Powerpoint Presentation, and social status of campaign.
