Teaching Social Action Syllabus Review - Summer ‘25

Please join us to discuss how the development of your syllabus is progressing. This meeting is for faculty and staff who have gone through an Institute, and are developing a syllabus for an upcoming social action class (or workshop).

Agenda and the Registration Form are below.

Agenda

3-3:20 pm — Intros, Mural Board, & Park Questions

  • Introductions: State name, Institution, Department, and Name of Class
  • Discussion of Mural Board template: to help monitor student campaign development in real time.
  • Questions: Let’s put down any questions you may have about your syllabus question, and park them, and if not addressed in the session, we will address at the end

3:15-3:25 pm General Structure of Class

Issue Development occurs early in semester, Building Power is at the final third, Campaign Launch happens in Week 9 for 15-week classes or Week 7 for 10-week class. Discuss image & Explore

  • Issue Development: If you are having students work in the community, and thus will build a student-wing of a community campaign, create a list of orgs and begin contacting them ASAP
  • Gather form
  • Gather Press Contacts (assignment desks and reporters); if in isolated area with little press, possibly work with your college newspaper and/or TV/radio station or may need to have students do their own social media

3:25-3:55 pm Small Group

Break into discipline-based groups (asynchronous course, environmental studies, change leadership, sociology, social work, others). Discuss:

  • What can you learn from each other about how to create a syllabus?
  • Are there unique aspects of your discipline/field of study that will impact the creation of your syllabus?
  • What readings from your field connect with social action?
  • How you've structured the "reflective parts" of social action around the “active parts” (i.e., Issue Development, Building Power, and Campaign Launch).
  • Which social action books, readings, and assignments you plan to use.
  • Which discipline-specific readings will you incorporate.

3:55-4:10: Five Things to Consider (from Institute)

  • Will campaigns focus on remain open for student choice or specific topics (like climate justice or poverty)?
  • What is the minimum campaign group size (3 students minimum)?
  • Will student campaigns operate on campus, off campus, or both?
  • How much time during each class will be allocated for campaign group meetings?
  • What proportion of readings will focus on social action—up to 50%, 25%, or none?

4:10-4:15 pm: Closing

  • Come to Disciplines Meeting: June 30th, register:
  • Final Course Prep: Thursday, August 14th, 3 pm-4:15 pm, https://teachingsocialaction.org/social-action-events/final-course-prep-for-fall-25
