Motivation to Teach Social Action:
I teach Race, Rhetoric, and Social Justice at the University of Virginia. I work on community-engaged projects with students to improve their lives, communities, and the world. I additionally lead an African Book Club community organization I started with my past students in Lesotho, Southern Africa, on developing sustainable ways to help the African Diaspora. The course development program will add to my community development projects and teaching philosophy.
Course Description:
This course examines how the study of race, rhetoric, and social justice can help us make sense of our times and empower us to actively engage in the struggle for diversity, equity, and inclusion on our campus and in communities worldwide. The rhetorics and racialized identities will consist of indigenous peoples, African descent, Latinx, and social activism, including Counter-theory, decolonization initiatives, and intersectionality.
