accepted in winter, but dropped out after son getting sick
I am a new Assistant Professor of Geography and will be developing several courses beginning this year. I conduct research and teach on topics of collective action around environmental changes and challenges, including those related to climate change and natural hazard-related disasters. I will be developing a course in particular based on my research on environmental peacebuilding in the Middle East to disambiguate environmental action, cooperation, and peacebuilding/justice. I intend to develop this course in an accessible and hands-on way, and integrating coursework with student-led social action would be completely exciting.
Yes, I developed a course as a PhD student on "sustainability for the common good", which was designed around the UN Sustainable Development Goals. As part of this course, student groups participated in volunteer activities in the local area, including, for example, rehabilitating trails and helping with community gardening projects. After these experiences, student groups wrote a paper and presented on their experiences getting involved in the community, and many shared how transformative of an experience it was. This made me realize how little opportunities university students tend to have to explore outside of the university bubble, and how many of them feel disenfranchised as youth facing mounting social and environmental challenges. Finding ways to re-engage students in the real world and to see the differences they can make is a passion of mine.
A range of environmental issues, including climate change, and how they connect with social issues in the area. For example, increasing heat stress and wildland fire smoke exposure and the disproportionate impacts on unhoused populations.
