Hi Bobby,
Thanks for reaching out. Truthfully, I am interested in attending this institute to learn more about this pedagogical approach so that it can inform not only my own teaching, but also the faculty professional development workshops that we host through CNU's Center for Community Engagement. As the academic director of our Center for Community Engagement, I spend a good deal of time talking with faculty members about how to engage with the community in their course designs. Teaching Social Action seems like another tool I could add to my toolbelt and share with other faculty members.
I know Vanessa reached out to you last week, but we have launched a new year-long fellowship program (the Tidewater Faculty Fellows program) that encourages faculty to incorporate CEL into their classrooms. We have a cohort of 8 faculty members who are interested in learning more about the various ways they can incorporate community engagement into their classrooms--we will spend this upcoming year helping these faculty members implement CEL in their classrooms.
So while I am not 100% positive if I will incorporate the Teaching Social Action framework into my IDST 470 course (or potentially, the other courses that I teach), I am really invested in attending the summer institute so that I can carry this model to CNU and share it with our faculty members.
If that's not the vision you all have for attendees, I completely understand and I will engage, instead, with Scott's book and the online resources.
Let me know your thoughts--I'm happy to chat more.
All my best,
Brooke
