Course Description:
The new numbers for the course will include both upper-division undergraduates and graduate students. As noted, the content will be revised from the ground up. Previously, class work relied heavily on on-line information (especially in order to work on within a global, comparative frame. In its first incarnation this Fall 2024, we will emphasize instead presentations and readings by scholars and activists in local communities* accompanied as feasible by class visits to these communities. These case studies will be expanded by films and on-line materials for non-US examples, in order to continue the course's effort to demonstrate that American approaches do not rest on universals. I am working, as well, on Spring 2025 follow-up travel to India (through "Alternate Service Break" and/or "Study Abroad") where we will visit NGOs and campuses actively pursuing social change programs. (Through many years of AIIS work -- I am Chair of their International Learning standing committee -- we have built deep connections to many of these.)
