Course Description:

I envision this course as a combination history / current events / writing course. Using Eric Foner's compilation of primary sources (brought together in the book called "Voices of Freedom") as history lessons and "mentor texts," I would ask students to exercise their own voices in writing about issues that are important today. As most of my students are currently incarcerated, they would not be running a "campaign" exactly, but we would work to have their writings contribute to ongoing campaigns on the outside, and be published in media outlets from local to national.
