Motivation to Teach Social Action:
Opportunities to connect with others on this important topic
Course Description:
This course explores the complex relationship between adolescent literacy, race, and power. We will examine how identity, culture, and personal experience shape language development, as well as how historical legacies of discrimination and colonialism influence current educational hierarchies. Through a socio-cultural lens, we will analyze how race is socially constructed and how "dominant literacy norms" often marginalize diverse voices. By the end of the course, you will be equipped to identify linguistic inequities, resist systemic oppression in literacy education, and implement culturally sustaining, antiracist teaching practices.
