When Taught

Depending on timing, would try and implement this year (Fall - Spring), but it may be the following year if I need more lead time to actually figure out how to pivot the curriculum.

Interest

I teach a Service Leadership class to students who are partnered with community organizations for 4-6 hours/week of service for an entire academic year. For the past six years, we've had them work in cohorts on some sort of community engagement project as part of their leadership role -- whether service projects, donations drives, awareness campaigns etc. We've had more interest from students in learning more about the advocacy side of the equation and it seems like our cohort projects could be a good avenue for this -- but my background is volunteer management and service events, not advocacy & social action-based campaigns. This seems like the ideal institute to help me get that skillset to be able to offer students the opportunity to dig into more substantive cohort projects during their class.

Experience

In our leadership classes we teach about social change and the spectrum of social change, so we dig into topics of social justice and social action on a theoretical level. However, most of what we've taught has been more about building knowledge/awareness rather than practice-focused. Students' service in their communities is often with established organizations and not focused as much on social action. I'd love to deepen my skillset in teaching social action in a more practice-based way.

Engagement Description

All sorts -- we have students working with nonprofits that focus on food security, houselessness, environmental justice, educational equality, domestic violence, social services for families, racial justice, and more. I could imagine that students will bring their passion for these issues into the brainstorm about what issue to focus their campaign on. I would plan to have them narrow down some ideas so that there are multiple students per campaign.
