Motivation to Teach Social Action:

Learning to teach actual social action and change, moving from theory to actionable practice

Course Description:

This course provides an academic and applied exploration of social action as a mechanism for advancing democratic engagement and policy change. Students examine the theoretical foundations of power, democracy, and collective action within the context of social work and youth services. Emphasis is placed on understanding how individuals and groups organize to address social problems, influence policy, and promote equitable outcomes in their communities.

Through a combination of readings, discussion, and experiential projects, students will analyze key concepts such as issue development, change theory, power building, group dynamics, and campaign planning. The course bridges theory and practice by guiding students in the design and implementation of a social action initiative, fostering professional skills in advocacy, leadership, and civic participation essential for effective practice in human service and policy environments.
