Motivation to Teach Social Action:
I am interested in learning best practices to engage students with participation in community-led action as well as helping them recognize their ability to be change-agents in a number of different ways through developing a campus or community campaign. I would love to participate in the program both for my own course development as well as to share insights with my department as we move to be more action-oriented.
Course Description:
This course is currently under development but will incorporate sociology of emotions, joy as motivation for human behavior, joy and species-being, and the commodification of joy/ toxic positivity. We will further explore the ways in which the expression and acknowledgement of joy, particularly of marginalized groups, is both suppressed and celebrated. As a social action component, students may identify a campus or community organization, evaluate it's relationship to joy in practice, and develop a campaign to expand, modify, or overhaul the work.
