Motivation to Teach Social Action:
I would like to implement assignments that are actionable and have an impact on both students and the community.
Course Description:
This course provides a sociological lens for understanding educational inequality in the US. The course begins with an introduction to the concepts of equality/inequality and equity/inequity, then turns to an overview of the spheres that shape schooling outcomes, such as students, families, neighborhoods, and schools, as well as the interaction among these spheres. In the latter part of the semester, we will discuss various special topics, including the education of immigrants, school segregation, school choice, higher education, and the future of educational inequality. In this course, you will reflect on your own experience with the education system through a sociological lens. You will then connect your experiences and the theories and concepts engaged in the course to consider the ways in which they might inform decision making.
