Course Description:

Are you interested in collaborative and participatory art that engages people and communities? In this course, we’ll delve into the transition of socially engaged artists from studio to participatory actions. Through presentations and reading discussions, we’ll explore the history of artists working beyond their studios, actively participating and engaging communities in diverse socio-political and environmental struggles (exp. campaigning, public art, policy making, etc.) By reviewing artists’ works and examining the dynamic intersection of art, organizing, and pedagogy we will learn about the ethics of engagement, diverse participatory research and collaboration strategies, documentation, and evaluation processes. Studio assignments are not medium specific but necessitate a rigorous research approach.
