Social Work with Community and Organizations

image

I am interested in participating in this institute because my teaching and scholarship are grounded in social justice, community engagement, and preparing students to become effective agents of change. In my social work courses, I intentionally integrate experiential and community-based learning opportunities that encourage students to critically examine systems of power and develop strategies for social action. I am particularly interested in strengthening my pedagogical approaches to teaching social action campaigns so that students not only analyze social problems but also actively engage in efforts to influence policies, institutional practices, and community outcomes.

Participating in this program would allow me to deepen my skills in designing structured, campaign-based learning experiences that align with my commitment to anti-oppressive practice, systems thinking, and democratic engagement. I am excited about the opportunity to learn from colleagues, refine my course design, and bring new tools back to my social work curriculum and community partnerships.

Course Description:

This course is part of the social work practice sequence. It builds on material discussed in previous practice courses and focuses on the use of self in developing working relationships in practice with organizations and communities. It has been designed to introduce students to the theories, concepts, and practice skills needed in social work practice with organizations and communities. In the process of understanding the functions and interactive aspects of organizational and community structures, students will learn how micro, mezzo, and macro skills are linked and practiced from a generalist practice and strengths perspective. The course integrates concepts related to social work values and ethics, human diversity, promotion of social and economic justice, and empowerment of at-risk populations.
