My background is in facilitation and systems change so I'm interested in adding to my skill set in working with students and groups on social action and change. I currently teach SW865- Social Work Leadership in Organizations. The main project of the course is focused on planning organizational change mainly directed to orgs that address large social issues. I believe the skills learned from participating in this course can be applied to my teaching in the macro social work sequence in the school.
I currently teach using Theory of Change and focus on guidance by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. The model leans heavily on social change efforts. I also use adaptive leadership as a framework for teaching organizational change within orgs that address large social issues. I am interested in a more action-oriented approach as my own experience and feedback from students is that they are interested in more direct action when addressing social change.
Some example issues students have focused on in the past include:
Change policy to create a consumer-inclusive governance process.
Update organization’s safety plan to be inclusive of individuals with disabilities.
Initiate a “Get out the Vote” campaign for an organization.
Create a “nursing space” in the workplace that is accessible for those to express milk.
Make gender neutral or single stall bathrooms available in your office
Update intake procedures so they are more accessible for individuals with disabilities
