Motivation to Teach Social Action:
I'm very passionate about macro level change and I really want to find a more engaging model for my students. I believe the Social Action Institute will provide me with a much more practical guide to help my social work students macro level social competencies.
Course Description:
The purpose of this course is to assist students acquire a critical understanding of social welfare policies and programs, and develop beginning skills in policy and advocacy practice. The content of the course is integrated with that of Social Work Practice Theory I and, therefore, students will develop intervention strategies to deal with the selected social problems at both the direct practice (micro) and policy/program (macro) levels. Intervention at a macro level requires skill in working with social systems and advocating with individuals and communities for social change. It is expected that the ability to approach problem situations at both levels will become an integral part of the students' professional practice.
