Motivation to Teach Social Action:
I'm interested in teaching this course to help students understand the complex dynamics of social movements and political change. Through examining various theories and real-world examples, I want students to recognize how ordinary citizens can effectively organize to create meaningful social and political impact. By analyzing the conditions that lead to successful movements across different democratic contexts, students will gain practical insights into civic engagement strategies. This knowledge will empower them to become more informed and active participants in democratic processes, whether through direct involvement in movements or through supporting causes they believe in.
Course Description:
This course aims at using various social movements theories in the field of political science to examine the conditions that help or hinder social movements formation, and the underlying causes for their success or failure. The course uses examples from various democratic polities, at the national and local level, to illustrate these theories.
