Motivation to Teach Social Action:
I am interested in participating in this programme as I lead on embedding Community Engaged Learning at York. Generally I adopt a model of team based projects, collaborating with communities on their identified needs. However in developing these programmes much of my teaching comes from a skills approach and through a reflection / skills lens. I am excited by the potential of this programme to help me to develop my knowledge and understanding of how to better enable students to make social change, enhancing civic awareness as well as personal development when they reflect on the process.
Course Description:
In the first instance I would look to pilot a Co-curricular programme on social action, potentially around sustainability and/or poverty (working with York's poverty truth commission). From this pilot I would hope to use this to inspire and redesign some of the existing modules I work on which include Public History, Digital Cultures and Evaluating Social Impact.
