Motivation to Teach Social Action:
This course development program aligns with my Benedictine institution’s mission and values of preparing students to engage meaningfully in the wellbeing of their workplaces, communities and the world at large. The values of hospitality, love of Christ and Neighbor and humility are 3 of the Benedictine Hallmarks of Higher Education which I infuse into my courses through discussions about how do we enact hospitality, how do we listen with our hearts, how do we remain humble and not assume that we know best what action to take or how to communicate it? I am always challenging my students to look beyond status quo in their communication endeavors to identify who is underserved or left out of workplace or community considerations. The course interests me, in part, because I want to help students learn to put their values and passions into action.
Course Description:
During their junior or senior years, SEEK scholars will commit themselves to an aspect of social justice through a notable endeavor which will stretch their limits, empower them to overcome self-doubt and to exercise leadership for the promotion of justice and charity.
