Motivation to Teach Social Action:

I will be teaching a social work course: Policy Practice, Advocacy and Community Organizing for Social Change this fall ,and I think this workshop will help provide me the structure and enthusiasm to work on course development.

Course Description:

Students explore the relevance of social welfare policy to all social work practices and activities. The course introduces social policy, social problems, social welfare, social justice and human rights as key concepts and social constructs emerging from historical values, social, economic and political structures. The historical development of social welfare policies, programs and services within the United States is examined specifically with a focus on the differential impact to well-being of social policy and programs. The course introduces techniques necessary to participate in policy practice and policy advocacy including participating in the electoral process, influencing policy through writing policy briefs. Students learn how to conduct policy analysis, examine social programs and policies for injustices and connect local and global policy issues for example, approaches to amelioration of poverty, civil rights, disability rights, environmental movement, minimum wage, housing issues, immigration issues, violence and policing etc.
