Motivation to Teach Social Action:
I would like to participate in this program because, as a Justice Studies professor, I often teach students about social justice issues and explore possible solutions to address injustice. However, much of this learning remains theoretical, with limited opportunities for practical, hands-on experience. Participating in this Institute would help me strengthen experiential learning by guiding students in developing and implementing their own social action campaigns. I believe that when students take ownership of these initiatives, they develop valuable skills in advocacy, leadership, and problem-solving that extend beyond the classroom and throughout their lives.
Course Description:
The course introduces students to the field of social work and the U.S. social welfare system. Students will explore the profession's history, values, ethics, and methods while examining how social welfare policies address contemporary social issues. The course also includes overviews of social welfare history, the range of contemporary services and agencies, and professional values, ethics, licensing, and associations.
