Motivation to Teach Social Action:
I would like to gain skills in helping students develop practices in social action. I am stronger at teaching theory than practice.
Course Description:
Using a practical theology methodology, the course promotes conversations among texts, contexts, and practices related to social justice. It explores biblical perspectives and Christian theological commitments on topics such as economic, racial, ecological, and restorative justice. Students are encouraged to analyze how power relations and social structures contribute to or detract from social justice, and to recognize the intersections among various forms of injustice. The course will mine resources within Christian traditions to promote justice, peace, renewal, and healing on a social level. Since one course cannot adequately address all topics related to social justice, this introductory course will explore particular case studies while also considering themes, methods, and practices that are widely relevant. Students will further develop their capacity for leadership in social justice ministries by learning and practicing skills in organizing, advocacy, conflict resolution, dialogue facilitation, circle processes, and peacemaking.
