Motivation to Teach Social Action:

I've been teaching Introduction to Latin American and Caribbean Studies for many years and I would like to incorporate a component of social action. I have never done that before.

Course Description:

This course is designed to provide a basic understanding of Latin America and the Caribbean. Although we will address pertinent historical aspects related to LAC's social, political, cultural and economic development, the main part of the course will focus more on relevant contemporary issues or topics affecting and transforming the region, such as women's roles, military dictatorships, revolutionary movements, democracy vs. authoritarianism, endemic poverty, indigenous communities, the role of art and culture, migration to the urban centers, the drug war, and Hispanic immigration to the USA.
