Motivation to Teach Social Action:
I am highly motivated to participate in this course because it would be a wonderful addition to the subjects I have taught so far. In addition, the course is closely aligned with my own academic interests and strongly resonates with my understanding and approach to social work.
Course Description:
The course is integrated into the Master's programme Social Work as a Human Rights Profession, specifically the module Human Rights Education.
The module introduces students to the concept and approaches of human rights education in accordance with the UN Declaration on Human Rights Education and Training, with a particular focus on learning about, through, and for human rights. It aims to deepen students' understanding of human rights education and its implications for learning environments, while emphasizing practical application through experiential exercises and critical reflection. Advanced students engage with didactic principles and develop their own human rights education projects through peer consultation and collaborative planning.
The module is grounded in human rights principles such as inclusion, non-discrimination, and participation, and explores the role of human rights education in social work and other educational contexts.
The course is currently being strengthened in its action-oriented dimension — an ideal fit for the Teaching Social Action training, particularly because students are required to design and implement their own projects. The approaches and methods covered could be integrated effectively into this project component, connecting human rights education with collective action and social change. The content would also be integrated into broader teaching across other higher education contexts to further develop action-oriented and participatory approaches in social work education. [1]
