Course Description:
Haitian Creole (Kreyòl Ayisyen) is a language of resistance. It emerged in the slave society of colonial Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti). It is the main language spoken in Haiti and is also used by Haitian communities around the world. This intermediate course will offer a comprehensive history of the language, including linguistic influences that have shaped and contributed to its development. We will equally examine the structure, grammar and syntax of Haitian Creole. Moreover, we will discuss its status, past and present, as well as the successes and challenges faced by its speakers at home and around the globe. There will be intensive practice in writing and reading using a variety of texts. Students are also expected to have class discussions and presentations in Haitian Creole on various subjects (education, immigration, health, etc.) to improve fluency, competency, and to deepen their understanding of the Haitian immigrant experience. This course qualifies as a LOTE (Language Other Than English) course for Pathways College Option purposes.
