HIV and Communicable Diseases (Special Topics)

HIV and Communicable Diseases (Special Topics)

Taught By:

Kristie Lipford Wyatt, Sociology

Assistant Professor

Le-Moyne Owen College

Motivation to Teach Social Action:

I have recently developed a Social Impact concentration in Sociology and I would love to offer a stand alone workshop or a curriculum that can be embedded in select courses in the concentration.

Course Description:

This special topics course blends public health and the social sciences to examine HIV inequities in Memphis, one of the most HIV-impacted cities in the nation. Over 15 weeks, students will take collective action and spend time designing and implementing a student-led policy campaign focused on HIV prevention, stigma reduction, or resource access.

All students will collaborate on one unified HIV policy campaign and take on specific team roles such as outreach, communications, data gathering, stakeholder mapping, and/or tactic development to support the overall effort. This course is grounded in Scott Lipton’s Social Action model and positions HBCU students in South Memphis, a medically underserved area, to confront real structural barriers and contribute to public health solutions that matter in Black, Southern, and disadvantaged communities.
