Starting in the academic year 2025/26
I'm passionate about teaching for social change and would like to participate in this program to develop my current work in this area. The program looks fascinating and I've heard lots of positive things. I would also relish the chance to participate alongside several colleagues who I see have already been accepted to the program and whose work I admire, but rarely have time to work with on exploring teaching for social change.
Yes. I have taught social action in different contexts. One example is the World on the Street project I founded when I led the University of East Anglia (UEA) Global Education Outreach Team (GEO-Team). I taught UEA students about local and global issues (e.g. poverty, inequity, climate change) and trained them to facilitate workshops on these topics with pupils in local secondary schools in Norwich and Norfolk.
We then formed action research teams in which school pupils, teachers, UEA students and I developed educational activities (based on the topics) to facilitate for members of the public (passers-by) in public spaces. Students and pupils led the activities and researched their impact.
Some issues could include campaigning to change campus physical and digital accessibility, non-inclusive teaching practices, and lack of inclusive example setting from senior leadership.
