I am interested in the exchange of ideas and perspectives that can enhance the work we do with our students as we all seek to develop the belief in our agency and abilities to improve our communities.
I have not taught social action within a school setting, however I do have experience working with young people in out-of-school and edge-of-school spaces introducing them to historical movements and the organizations that inform them. I have also participated in the founding of Teaching in the Urban South, a non-profit designed to mimic the historic organization of Black educationists in the South.
Students will likely choose issues related to education, including but not limited to, book bans, food deserts, healthcare, etc.
I learned about the institute via discussions with colleagues and a link to the website.

I would love to hear more about how people are negotiate the need to teach social action and the current ideological positionings found in some institutions regarding social engagement. I would also like to hear strategies to help students recognize and make use of their agency as they seek to make the world in the image that they most appreciate.
