I am most excited to help students move beyond identifying and examining harmful stereotypes and omissions to thinking more concretely about how to change those problematic practices.
Course Description:
This course explores the complexities and strategies of fair, responsible reporting on diaspora, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), and immigrant/minority communities. It explores the media's historical failures and challenges in accurately and sensitively representing these groups and provides practical tools for integrating context and perspective into reporting. Students will learn to move away from cultural tropes, reinforcing harmful stereotypes, and clichés to develop more nuanced and respectful journalism.
