Course Description:
Community Organizing: Practice
This course provides students with practical skills and knowledge in community organizing principles and methods. Students will learn how to effectively engage with communities, identify issues, build collective power, and develop campaigns for social change. Through a combination of theoretical frameworks and hands-on experience, participants will develop the competencies needed to organize communities around shared concerns and advocate for meaningful solutions.
The course emphasizes experiential learning through direct engagement with local communities. Students will work in teams to apply organizing techniques in real-world settings, develop leadership skills, and reflect critically on their practice. Special attention will be given to issues of power, diversity, inclusion, and ethical considerations in community organizing.
By the end of this course, students will have gained practical experience in community assessment, relationship building, power mapping, strategy development, and mobilization techniques. This course is ideal for students interested in social action, civic engagement, community development, and political activism.
