Course Description:

There are thousands of community-based education non-profits that work with public schools to support public school students. Whether it's supporting literacy development, college-access, social-emotional development or sports, community-based education non-profits promote and support young people around the country. However, many of them are operating with small budgets and trying to tackle big issues. This class will invite students to conduct a community-based participatory action research (CBPAR) with an education organization of their choosing to support the work already happening in the community and students will find ways to amplify and strengthen the work. All too often, students projects can "reinvent the wheel" of social change. This class will counter that narrative by inviting students to do the hard but critical work of transformation, which relies on trust and partnership.
