Motivation to Teach Social Action:
I am deeply committed to the principles of social justice and believe in the power of education to challenge systemic inequalities. In a time where social justice issues are increasingly at the forefront of societal conversations, I am excited to contribute to the development of a curriculum that addresses these urgent concerns. As a social scientist and advocate, I currently teach interdisciplinary courses at my university, combining my care and concern for the environment with a deep understanding of diverse cultures. I focus on fostering critical thinking about the intersection of race, gender, class, and environmental justice. This course would not only allow me to bring my experience in social justice and course design to the table but also create an inclusive learning environment where students can gain the knowledge and skills needed to become informed advocates for a more equitable and sustainable world
Course Description:
My course, Climate Change and Marginalized Communities, focuses on how climate change disproportionately impacts vulnerable populations, with an emphasis on environmental and climate justice. We explore the systemic inequities that increase these communities’ exposure to environmental hazards and examine both the challenges they face and the resilience they demonstrate. Through case studies, discussions, and practical applications, students will engage with strategies for advocacy and equitable solutions to address these critical issues.
