Motivation to Teach Social Action:
I am particularly interested in this Institute because I want to connect vocational education, democratic learning and social participation through real-world experience.
As a certified vocational educator and managing director of DAGBI, my work brings together vocational education, integration, educational project development and democratic learning. I am especially interested in moving beyond teaching democracy only as knowledge and enabling learners to experience democratic participation through their own collective action.
I would like to develop a co-curricular Social Action workshop series for young adults in vocational education and integration contexts. Participants would identify issues affecting their educational, vocational or social environment, research them, formulate realistic demands, identify relevant decision-makers and work together on a concrete Social Action campaign.
The Teaching Social Action approach is particularly attractive to me because it combines experiential learning, collective problem-solving and democratic participation. My goal is to adapt this approach to vocational and adult education and develop a sustainable format that can become part of DAGBI's educational work.
Course Description:
Bridging Work and Democracy is a co-curricular Social Action workshop series for young adults in vocational education, career orientation and integration contexts.
The workshop series will combine democratic education with experiential and project-based learning. Participants will identify issues that affect their educational, vocational or social environment, investigate the causes of these issues, analyse institutions and decision-making structures, develop achievable demands and organise a collective Social Action campaign.
Possible topics may include access to vocational education and employment, recognition of qualifications, digital or administrative barriers, discrimination, participation of young people, access to public services or other issues identified by the participants themselves.
Rather than prescribing a political position or campaign topic, the program will provide participants with tools for democratic decision-making, research, power analysis, communication, strategy, collective action and reflection.
The aim is to strengthen participants' ability to understand institutions, cooperate with others and experience themselves as capable of contributing constructively to social and democratic change.
