Motivation to Teach Social Action:
I'm interested in this course development program because I want to strengthen my teaching by learning new tools and approaches that help students move from literature and research into meaningful, real-world applications. I'm eager to develop courses that not only engage students academically but also equip them to translate theory into practice, particularly regarding actualizing equity, social policy, and community impact.
Course Description:
SOWK 502 is the second course in the methods sequence. The course builds on the generalist practice framework emphasized in Generalist Social Work Practice and social work Methods I and will focus on continuing to develop and apply empowerment and strengths-based interventions with urban populations at risk. Social Work practice with communities and organizations is the major focus. Community organization, development, and social planning in urban environments provide the frame of reference for skills development targeted at creating a knowledge base for practice that is grounded in the philosophy of justice. The course will build on knowledge from the ecological systems perspective and provide a framework for using this perspective for understanding and assessing communities and organizations. Students will be expected to develop an understanding of the importance between linkages among client systems, communities, and organizations.
Specific content on practice with diverse urban populations will integrated with the values and ethics of the profession.
