Motivation to Teach Social Action:
I teach and am the course convener for Advanced Integrated Policy Practice, a course centered on advocacy and policy change for MSW graduate students. The Institute on Teaching Social Action would give me a structured opportunity to strengthen this course by learning the experiential campaign model and applying it directly to the course. Specifically, I plan to redesign student assignments so that students develop and launch their own social action campaigns aimed at changing a social policy. I am committed to implementing this model, dedicating a substantial portion of the course to campaign work, and participating fully in the institute's community of practice.
Course Description:
This advanced policy practice course builds on the competencies acquired in the foundation year. The course introduces a rights-based approach to policy practice and advocacy. Using human rights principles, students will learn how to use specific policy analysis frameworks to plan and develop advocacy strategies that facilitate social change. Students will learn and apply specific advocacy skills, addressing policy issues in community, organizational, and legislative settings. [1]
