Engagement Description

I believe my students would be drawn to addressing issues related to substance abuse, criminal justice, mental health support, and harm reduction.

Experience

I have not taught social action before. However, I have taught some proposal-centered rhetoric classes in the past, so I am familiar with working with students to identify a problem, imagine solutions, and attempt to persuade an audience of the validity of those solutions. I have also taught several courses with significant group projects and trained Writing Center tutors professionally, both roles where I worked with students to build teamwork and listening skills. Additionally, I was involved in some social action campaigns in graduate school that resulted in policy changes within my academic department.

Interest

I’m committed to making sure my upcoming class on Narratives of Addiction includes a social focus for a handful of reasons. For one, the University of Pikeville has a commitment to experiential learning, requiring students to take coursework that connects their learning to the “real world” outside the classroom as a part of our general education curriculum. More importantly, I believe it is vitally important for a course like mine to center the real world implications of the stories we tell about addiction. I think including a social action campaign would be a useful way to make students form connections between their behavior as citizens and neighbors and the texts we study in class. Finally, I'm currently working to expand experiential learning opportunities across our English program curriculum at the University of Pikeville, and I believe this program will help me to revise other courses in our curriculum to include social action projects.

How did you hear about opportunity

The dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pikeville, Ella Smith-Justice, suggested I look into the institute.
