Engagement Description

The Marginalization and Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools; Analyzing the criminalizing policies and practices in public schools that render them vulnerable to abuse, exploitation, dehumanization and under the worst circumstances, death; Creating inclusive school cultures for historically marginalized student, and practical practices in the classroom that engage and raise the voices of marginalized students, families and staff in schools.

Experience

In the Summer of 2021 I conducted three week-long half-day PD workshop about the adultification and criminalization of Black girls leading to their push out of schools. In the Fall of 2021, Spring of 2022, Summer of 2022, I lead a session on Culturally Responsive Literacy and Instructional Practices with teachers in the Hampton Roads and Central Regions of Virginia.

Interest

I like the idea of being trained in a cross-disciplinary program with scholars outside of my field and university. Additionally, I am believe this program will expose me to theories and frameworks that I have not heard of but will be beneficial in creating the foundation for the practical application of the course material for school teachers, staff and administrators. In 2023, I had the opportunity to participate in the Reimagining Education Summer Institute at Teachers College and the Critical Race Theory Summer School with The African American Policy Forum. I learned so much from the speakers, workshops and other participants and would like an opportunity to take what I learned and apply it to my discipline of Teacher Education.
