Course Description:
This course will examine the principles of community psychology and liberation psychology, a discipline that uses psychological approaches to understand oppression among individuals and groups and encourages empowerment, healing, and transformation. Throughout the course, we will partner to define community, identify psychological factors that influence social action, and contextualize individual acts with larger social movements. In addition to engaging with selected readings, videos, and podcasts, we will speak with local community leaders from multiple fields (e.g., art, music, youth development) about their experiences. Throughout the semester, students will work on a social action project of their choosing.
