Engagement Description

Students may choose to address public k-12 and higher education workers fighting for the students and faculty rights. Students may discuss visual arts' role in activism and explore the power of art to communicate stories, to move people, and to disrupt power dynamics in order to make change.

Experience

I have not taught social action before but I am a experienced community organizer. I am the founder and past lead commissioner for the California Art Education Association's Equity Diversity and Inclusion commission. I feel like the Institute on Teaching Social Action is the next step I need to take to align my community work with my teaching and course instruction.

Interest

The Foundations of Art Education course has a service learning component listed, but as of recent, it has not been enacted to its fullest potential. It is my hope that with the skills I learn from the Institute on Teaching Social Action that I can restore the service learning component to its former prominence, even making it the most celebrated part of the course that students look forward to when signing up.

How did you hear about opportunity

I heard about this opportunity from my VCU faculty list serv and am very glad I did!
