Course Description:
SWRK 7022, Communities and Organizations is a required foundation course designed to prepare students to apply evidence-based interventions to social work practice with groups, organizations, and communities. The course emphasizes mezzo and macro practice skills/roles, evidence-based theories, problem solving processes, group dynamics, phases of group development, leadership structure, organization practice and community interventions. Issues inherent to diversity, at-risk populations and social justice are integrated into the course.
Course Rationale: The purpose of this foundational course is to develop understanding and skills related to the complexities of macro practice with groups, organizations, and communities. Specifically, social workers are mandated by the Code of Ethics to intervene with communities and organizations and to create social change through this work. Community organizing and community engagement are fundamental social work skills. This course provides the knowledge base and practical skills to engage in social work with organizations and communities.
