Motivation for Teaching Social Action:
The opportunity to show students, that as a group united, your voice is powerful. We are currently living in a very divided nation and world. Change starts with us - recognizing the inequalities and injustice that exist within our world. Together we can make change happen, with persistence and passion. Reading and reviewing the materials also increased my interest in participation, particularly at designing a course that is unique to our required, liberal arts foundational courses.
Course Description:
Currently, this course is just at the inception phase. I would like to create a course that examines the campus and community concerns that impact our institution, students, and faculty. I would like students in this course to understand social change theories and how they are present in our everyday world but extend the social action component of the course to stretch throughout the year, allowing adequate time for students to pursue their campaigns for change. I see this course infused with and influenced by faculty from departments across campus (education, communications, sociology, anthropology, psychology, etc.,) Again this is in the very beginning stages of development.
