Course Description:
Environmental Sociology is the study of the interactions between society and the environment. We will cover the main topics, theories, and questions within environmental sociology. There are many dimensions to society, including institutions, communities, and inequalities. Similarly, there are just as many aspects to the “environment” from natural resources to our own bodies. All these aspects taken together make the relationship between the two a complicated and vast matrix. In this class, we will unpack major themes within the environmental sociological matrix. During our time together I will encourage you to develop and apply the environment into your sociological imagination to answer the following question: How does environmental sociology relate to me and society? We will discuss the many ways scholars, activists, and artists observe and theorize the very complex dynamics of the environment. We will continually relate the ideas we encounter to the contemporary social world and the California Central Valley.
