Course Description:
Students will investigate the history of and current practice of social action for making change in sustainability in the United States and globally, looking at movements and organizations such as Powershift, Sunrise, Standing Rock, the Green New Deal, Fridays for Future and Extinction Rebellion, and at other movements that students will identify and research themselves. The course will take a critical and an intersectional perspective on sustainability, as an idea that could but does not always in practice align with values of justice, indigenous sovereignty, human rights, antiracism, access and centering leadership by nonwhite people and people with LGBTQIA+ identities. Through preparation and practice in class, students will gain skills to be ready to engage in social action themselves.
