Course Description:

Description from Spring of 2024: "This course examines the role of community practice in addressing environmental injustice on the micro, mezzo and macro levels. Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives we examine threats to sustainability and equity (e.g., environmental racism, extractive economics) as well as implications of climate collapse for marginalized communities. We will explore local and global grassroots solutions, as we learn from front-line communities and environmental justice organizers.

Through the course students will have the opportunity to learn about a range of environmental justice organizing approaches at the intersections of social, economic, and environmental justice, and engage in a Community-Based Environmental Justice Organizing Project with local organization Portland Harbor Community Coalition (PHCC), which will culminate in a Candidate Forum on campus that will invite local political candidates to address issues related to environmental justice."
