ENGL 223 students will be investigating research questions identified by community partners through primary and secondary research in longer-format research papers. Each community partner has identified specific areas they would like the students' research papers to focus on, and each organization has requested that students conduct community-based research by collecting and citing first-hand accounts from their constituents. Each organization has requested the following research areas of inquiry:
HELP, inc:
Students will investigate lack of affordable housing in Hampton Roads by
- Collecting economic research/data to advocate for affordable housing
- Collecting first-hand accounts from people affected by affordable housing
- Explaining specific impact of HELP in the community
Peninsula SPCA
Students will investigate the importance of animal welfare in community education programs but also health and wellness of companion animals by
- Detailing why it’s important to support local organizations in particular (vs. national)
- Collecting first-hand accounts from people utilizing the organization
- Explaining specific impact of Peninsula SPCA in the community
Hampton History Museum
Students will investigate the importance of public history programs to aid collective understanding of how the past affects our present by
- Researching larger benefits and challenges of public history
- Highlighting why public history is especially important for Hampton Roads
- Explaining specific impact of Hampton History Museum and their public-facing work
- Collecting first-hand accounts from people utilizing public history programs.
