Course Description:
This studio seminar delves into the multifaceted challenges and opportunities surrounding historic preservation in Miami, a vibrant city with a long history of diverse cultural exchange, migration, human-nonhuman relations, and real estate development. Using the framework of social action and design justice, students will engage with contemporary realities of living in Miami: gentrification related to climate change, flooding and emergency evacuations, and lack of affordable housing. They will engage with historical research methods to understand how racist policies have shaped housing infrastructure and what types of tools residents might deploy to protect the long-term residents of the city. Students will propose their own campaigns and also collaborate and engage with existing efforts in historic preservation, environmental cleanup, and community arts.
