Course Description:
This workshop introduces the theory of overlapping social and ecological injustices and crises and how they connect to social action in NGOs and government organizations. Community Studies is an undergraduate BA-granting program in which students and faculty seek to understand how social change happens in theory and practice. Founded in 1969, Community Studies is only available at UC Santa Cruz. But it has earned a global reputation for its critical approach to understanding social justice and community-based experiential learning. The heart of Community Studies is a 6-month field study in which students are embedded within and work with social change organizations. Through our distinct curricular design, students develop a mix of intellectual, professional and social/emotional skills that prepare them for a wide variety of careers in the nonprofit, human services, education, policy and research fields, as well as the theoretically-informed vision and practical wisdom necessary to help co-create a liberated, fair, democratic, and ecologically sustainable planet.
