Course Description:
This course focuses on the theory and practice of promoting shared understanding and the common good through civil discourse as related to the development and presentation of oral messages. Students will be expected to develop an understanding of the principles and practices of public speechmaking that constitute civil discourse, how the First Amendment enables it, its history and role in problem-solving, and the influence of mediated discourse on democracy.
Please note: This class is both HIP Global Learning and DEI designated. As such, the approach (pedagogy), contents and assignments of this class will reflect this focus. Additionally, this course will take a social action approach to civil discourse. Social action occurs when folks band together to develop power to change policy. This has been a part of the American experiment in democracy throughout our history. This course will explore power and democracy and the role of civil discourse in building power, group dynamics, strategy and tactics, and campaign planning and implementation.
