Motivation to Teach Social Action:
At Stetson, we are looking to develop an advanced course for juniors/seniors in our Bonner program that would be structured as a social action course. It would build on the first-year Bonner seminar, which is an introduction to the principles of community organizing, as well as the relationships Bonner students have built in the community during their first 2-3 years. In addition, we are interested in the possibility of a workshop series (or possibly course) for non-Bonner students that focuses on social action to make change on campus. My colleague Elon Epps will be joining me for this training as a collaborative partner. Our focus will be on the Bonner seminar, although we will also be thinking about how we can apply the social action model in the non-Bonner workshop series/course.
Course Description:
In this course, junior and senior Bonner students will build on their first-year training in the principles of community organizing and the relationships they have cultivated with their community partner(s) to pursue a social action project developed with one or more community partners. Guided by the needs of the community partner, students will pursue a policy or system change pertaining to major issue in the community.
