Motivation to Teach Social Action:
I am excited about the opportunity to participate in this initiative because it aligns closely with my commitment to fostering active citizenship and social responsibility among students in my classes and my work with Bonners, student organizations, etc. Teaching social action is not just about imparting knowledge; itβs about empowering students to become positive change-makers in communities and our world. An experiential learning approach also provides students with a hands-on opportunity to engage with real-world issues. I look forward to being in community with others - discussing, learning, and sharing ideas.
Course Description:
This community-based course introduces human rights, social justice, and environmental justice theoretical frameworks and issues from global perspectives. Through interdisciplinary service- learning, students will have opportunities to explore art as activism and participate in civic engagement. Specific topics including the intersectionality of identities including race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, religion, ability, nationality, language and education will be examined, and provide roots to further personal and intellectual development and global citizenship. Diverse readings will include equity-centered explorations of history and the complex interplay of theories in a pluralistic society, with opportunities to apply them to current equity and inclusion issues.
